First, the monochromatic example. In this picture, which is a fan-made ad for the Yankees after they won the World Series this past fall (woooooo go Yanks!), white text is superimposed on a gray background above one of the central figures of the Yankees, closer Mariano Rivera. The white text/gray background is effective here because of a multitude of reasons.
First, it matches the Yankees colors, which are white, a dark blue, and black.
Secondly, the text states that while the rest of the world is hard, the Yankees are dependable and reliable. The laid-back colors match that subject well.
Finally, Rivera is known for being stoic and calm at all times, which makes him perfect for this relaxed, reliable ad.
This ad is for the beetle car, from Volkswagon. The reason why it works as a brightly-colored ad is because the four cars are so brightly colored. It grabs the reader's attention because of the allusion to the Beatles album as well as the contrast to the drab London background.
Um, I just wanted to say that I love the fan-made ad. Mariano is the BEST. And so nice and modest. And the Yankees are just the best of the best. Plus, that's a hot poster. 42 just makes it hotter.
