Poster | Young

Design Strategy and Client Information: The demographic for my poster’s not-for-profit organization “The Pajama Program” is most likely 30-60 year old suburbanites because my event is a cocktail party and it is $100 per ticket, meaning that the buyer needs to have some disposable income. In my design I wanted to appeal to this audience as well as make it fun because it is an event that benefits underprivileged children. The Pajama Program’s mission is to deliver donated pajamas and bedtime stories to children in need of them, so I made the entire background of the poster part of a striped pajama shirt and used the phrase “Make Dreams Come True” to play off the fact that people dream when they sleep and that this organization makes young children’s dreams come true. This organization can afford color, but I kept it simple, leaving a good amount of white space, and only 3 colors (light blue: C 30.62% M 0% Y 4.37% K 0%, purple: C 100% M 100% Y 26.98% K 13.66% and yellow C 7. 47 M .7% Y 60.66% K 0%).

Choice of Typefaces: For my main type I used a font called Shelley Script Allegro, because while I realize that script is not the easiest to read typeface, I tried to use a type that would look similar to monogram of someone’s initials or name on their pajamas. Beneath this for the event information I decided to use Trajan Pro because I thought it was easy to read and complimented the script above nicely. The letters in Trajan Pro are all caps but I thought that the font gave off a formal yet fun feel that I thought was appropriate for an adult cocktail party that is meant to benefit children.

Visuals: I created my design in adobe illustrator and mostly I used the pen tool and the rectangle and ellipse tools to create my image of a light blue and white striped pajama top. Specifically I used the pen tool for all that is black and the shape tools for everything that is in color including the stripes on the top, the buttons, the shadows, and the stitching around the logo (‘tag’). Initially I was going to draw this image and then scan it in, but then I decided to try my hand at the pen tool. This design definitely came together more as I was actually doing it and my design changed a lot from when I started out. At the last second instead of putting my organization’s logo in the bottom corner of my design, I decided to make it a little more interesting and make it look like the tag of my pajamas.
