Week ten | Sophia Montesdeoca

* The font that I actually used on my project was ITC Kabel, I made my project into jpeg's on a computer that wasn't in New House so the font was lost .

Design Stragety and Visuals

Throughout my childhood my aunts, uncles and dad have discussed the meaning of my last name. Although they never come to a concrete consensus the general agreement bubbles it down to mean mountains/valleys/forest of oak. I decided to use that as the theme for my logo.
My last name Montesdeoca starts with an “M”, so I decided to play off that and make mountains that also appear as an M. I applied gestalt principles by enclosing it in a green circle (C=60 M=0 Y=80 K=10) which made it more visually appealing. I used a green color pallet, with warm undertones of yellow, to help create the illusion of mountains and embody a nature theme. I felt that the light green (C=14 M=0 Y=29 K=0, at 29%) was very warm and inviting. It aided in creating the feeling I wanted my set to portray. As a result I used it as a prominent color throughout my set. I used the middle shade of green (C=50 M=0 Y=100 K=0) to help give contrast between the lighter and darker shades. I also used it to even out the visual weight on my logo. The upper condensed portion of my business card appeared heavy compared to the larger lower half of light green. The middle shade acts as a liaison between the two.
I decided on including the quote by Gandhi as it’s one that I truly believe. And I think it is a good reflection of who I am.

Choosing a Typeface

As I was searching the library for a san-serif typeface that would compliment my logo I came across ITC Kabel std. I loved it almost instantly as its letters are rounded, which gives them a fun feel. I think they, aided by my color, give my business card, stationary and envelope a friendly and inviting feel. I used the book weight across the three items however I used a medium weight for my name on the stationary to give it more precedence.

  1. I really like your logo and the significance it has with the meaning of your last name. I also like the incorporation of the Ghandi quote on your business card and stationery.

  2. Sophie! I remember telling you this when we were in the labs working on our logo floating redos, but I absolutely love your logo. It's sophisticated but fun, just like you are. And the colors are gorgeous (but I may just be biased because green is my favorite color). Great job on the logo project!
