Vision and Design Strategy
I wanted to design an article about Kenny Chesney because I have a mild obsession with him. I chose an article that focused on his relocation to Malibu because Malibu is a beautiful place and I wanted to use strong images. My headline, “When the Sun Goes Down in Malibu,” stems directly from Kenny’s song “When the Sun Goes Down.” Since my magazine is a country music magazine, I figured most readers would be familiar with the song since it was on the Top 40 Country Hits for several months. I flipped the second line of text in the headline to mirror the setting sun in the photo on the adjacent page. I used oranges and yellows to make the spread warm, inviting, and fun, which I felt reflected both the tone of the article, the feel of Malibu, and the theme of Kenny Chesney’s music.
Typeface Choice
I used Bell Gothic Standard for my cover typefaces because I thought it was a fun, readable, natural typeface. I originally tried to use a few different typefaces on the cover lines, but it made the cover as a whole look unorganized. Instead, I just varied the type sizes to create some contrast. I stayed with Bell Gothic for my sidebar and headline to maintain consistency, again varying the typeface size for visual hierarchy. For my body text I used Big Caslon, because I felt it was really readable and inviting. I used Arial my photo caption because I felt it contrasted nicely with Big Caslon and remained readable.
Color Information and Image and Text Sources
The CMYK value for the yellow in my headline and sidebar boxes is 12/0/92/0. The value for the orange text is 8/25/60/0. My article came from: http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20264198,00.html
