I visit http://www.weather.com every day. Though I continue to use it, I think it's not a web Site that exemplifies good hierarchy and design.
1.) The home page has an extensive navigation bar that has a lot of options I don't use, like 'driving' 'sports' 'outdoor activities' and others. I think the site would do better combine some of these into a broader selection, just like "outdoor" because this clutters the screen and I end up completely ignoring many of the options since the clutter is unattractive and I don't even want to look at them. In this way, the page doesn't lead me anywhere- I only do one one action, which is to enter my zip and see the weather for the day. Aside from the navigation bar there are tons of search bars and links to news-- but no hierarchy! I don't pay attention to any of it.
2.) The most dominant item is a picture that has to do with one news link- it doesn't relate to me or my location at all, and nobody really visits this web Site to see those sorts of things. They visit the site so they know what to wear that day! The other dominant image is an ad- also something I don't want to pay attention to.
3.) I think the good portion happens once you enter your zip code. The navigation bar on that page offers all sorts of forecasts, for the day, the hour, the weekend, the week, the month, etc... I like the way it looks, too, and the hierarchy of the page brings me down to more information.
4.) I think this site could be largely improved it it got rid of the clutter and had things in an order that made sense, rather than sprinkled randomly throughout the page.
It's weird that I hate this site so much, but I use it every day more than once.
