Magazine Project | Wong

Front Cover
My article was about tattoos – specifically Asian tattoos. I had trouble trying to choose between making a magazine that focused on tattoos, or making a magazine that focused on Asian culture. I ended up choosing to make the magazine about tattoos because the best pictures I found were better suited for a tattoo magazine cover. I decided to go with a man’s entire tattooed back because I thought that it would wow the audience – you don’t really see many men with a large koi fish on his back in America. Since it was so rare, and my article was about how so many Americans got Asian tattoos without learning the meanings first, I thought that it was a suitable front cover picture.

Back Cover
I didn’t want to go overboard with the tattoo theme, so I left the back a simple black cover. Otherwise, there would have been another picture of full back tattoo.

First Spread
For this spread, I was aiming for a skin colored page, and so it would look like a person’s arm with tattoos on it. It didn’t exactly come out the way I imagined because I didn’t realize how hard it would be to trace each tattoo in order to put it onto the pages. Also, I couldn’t find many tattoos that I thought would mesh well with the spread –I wanted it to stay relatively clean since the front cover was so showy.

Second Spread
I tried to spread out my article (I actually did write this article) throughout the two pages. I liked using three columns because I felt that using four columns was too crowded. The three columns seemed to space out well. I used a 12x12 grid system so that I could place pull quotes and pictures in between columns instead of in the columns. Although I ended up putting the graphics in the columns instead of in between the columns like I planned, I think overall it came out well. My sidebar is supposed to be the same orange color as the koi I used in the opposite page, but I feel like the sidebar orange’s shade is a little too bright. But I thought that the sidebar (match the Asian tattoo with the celebrity) would be fun way to end the spread.
