Rationale
I knew from the beginning that I wanted to do an automobile story of some sort. Articles about cars offer the opportunity for a great variety of pictures (the exterior, interior, engine, etc.). I found this article as I browsed through the magazine section at Barnes & Noble and it caught my eye. The Regal is a nice looking car that lends itself to great pictures.
In terms of typography, I chose variations of Helvetica Neue for the cover (including the flag and cover lines) as well as the folio. Helvetica Neue is a versatile sans-serif typeface with many different weights. It’s also easily readable. For the headline, deck head and captions I chose DIN, a modern sans-serif font. DIN reflects the style of the Regal, modern and bold (and rather tech-ish). Plus, it comes in four different weights, so it is versatile. For the body text, I chose the ever-popular Adobe Garamond Pro, a great serif typeface. Garamond lends itself to readability.
As for color, I used a bright red on the cover (and in the folio): CMYK 9, 95, 90, 1. Red is an eye-catching color that seems to be very popular for automobile magazines (Both Automobile and Motor Trend use it on their covers). I chose a steel blue (CMYK 45, 28, 12, 0) as the main color of the story. The blue serves as visual gestalt because it mimics the blue luminosity of the vehicle in the first spread.

I love this! It looks very professional. I especially like that you extended the "T" in shift. It gives it that distinctness of a logo, and really makes me think of fast movement--like I can't keep up with that T it's flying off the page so fast.
ReplyDeleteI also like how you borrowed the blue from the first spread's photo and used it as a sidebar, and then created the gestault throughout the feature. I only worry that the fold in the magazine will take away from the car in that first spread.
Great job!
This magazine looks really professional. The second spread is great and catches the readers attention. The front cover looks like a real car magazine. The dominant photo on the third spread really separates itself from the rest of the page and pops out at the reader. I also really like the sidebar of the timeline.
