Project 4: Magazine | Shaer

Decision making for story: I chose to create a magazine about baking because it is a hobby of mine. My reasoning for implementing this particular interest of mine was because I could envision several visuals and concepts for the project. I decided to use the article I selected because their shop is in my hometown and I love their cookies. In terms of the layout for my story, I used a grid of seven rows and columns and my text is divided into two columns per page on the second spread. My gutter is 2p. The outside margin is set to 5p. My top margin is set to 4p and my bottom margin is set to 6p. I decided to bleed images on every page of my magazine.

Choice of Typefaces: I came up with the name “Confection Connection” to play off of the idea of sugar and baking. The title of my magazine is written in Bembo std extra bold italic and it is in font size 54 pt. The text is filled with C=0 M=0 Y=52 K=0 and outlined in C=46 M=15 Y=0 K=0. I chose this font because it was bold and a little quirky. My cover lines are written in Bembo std bold and Bembo std italic in font size 18 pt. The color of my cover lines is C=70 M=84 Y=0 K=0. I decided to use this typeface because it was an easy to read variation of my title’s font.   On the first page of my spread I used Gill Sans bold for my headline in font size 65pt. I chose this font because I thought the article needed a sans serif font, it was bold enough to fill with a background picture, and the shape of the letters reminded me of cookie cutter shapes. In addition to filling the text with and image of cookie dough, I also added the bevel and emboss effect and inner shadow to add dimension and life. My deck head is written in Gill Sans italic in font size 24pt. The leading is set to 27pt and the alignment is centered. I chose this font because it was a playful, yet legible, variation of the text used in my headline. The color of my deck head text is C=8 M=44 Y=0 K=0 because it matches the pink flower decorations. My body text on the first page of my spread is VAG rounded std thin font size 10pt. The text has 14 pt leading and is justified with last line aligned left. The tracking on the text is 130. I wanted to use VAG rounded std font for my body text because it has different variations to choose from, is very easy to read, and has a casual attitude that matches my article. The body text on the second page of my spread is also VAG rounded std thin font size 10pt. The text has 14 pt leading and is left justified. The text has 50 tracking. The section titles in my body text are VAG rounded std bold with a font size of 16pt and 14pt leading. The color of the section titles text is C=0 M=89 Y=68 K=0 because it matches the pink accents in some of the cookies and the apron the woman is wearing. I chose to incorporate these subtitles because I liked the way it broke up the text and added color. My captions in the side bar on page four are written in VAG rounded std thin with a font size of 10 pt and a leading of 12pt. The text is written in white because I wanted the colors of the side bar on page four to repeat the colors of the side bar on page five.  The caption under the image on page five is written in VAG rounded std thin with a font size of 9pt and a 10.8pt leading. I chose to center the text under this image. I made it a font size smaller because I wanted it to be more inconspicuous. My pull quote is written in VAG rounded std bold with a font size of 16pt and a leading of 20 pt. I used this font weight and size so that it would match my subtitles. The quotation marks are the same font with a font size of 32pt. My side bar text is written in Times regular in font size 21pt for the title and 11pt for the body. The body text has 13.2pt leading and the title has 25.2pt leading. I know Times is not typically suggested, but I thought it was fitting for the recipe. I wanted a serif font to contrast with my article body text and I liked the common feel of the times font for my cookie recipe. It also reminds me of a font used in direction handbooks and recipes are lists of instructions. I used the font color C=0 M=89 Y=68 K=0 again to match the images and section titles and add interest to my sidebar. Lastly, my folios are written in Bembo std semi bold in 12pt font to compliment the text on the cover of my magazine.

  1. I love the photo you used on your cover, and the cookie crumbs throughout the magazine! It tied the whole spread together really nicely and made it really fun and engaging. I also think you used white space really effectively in your first spread - there's the perfect balance of color and white space!

  2. Overall I really enjoyed looking at your magazine! I think the cookie crumbs throughout the magazine is so clever and fun! For your first spread, I think you placed everything very evenly and used your white spread very effectively. it is not over crowded with cookies and the headline is very appealing. :)
