Project 4: Magazine Design | Young

Story: The reason why I chose my story about ‘couchsurfing’ is simple, I love to travel. I also know that it is oftentimes hard to travel on a budget, and being a college student, I know how important this is. I thought that my article was interesting and relevant to young people around my age who want to travel, but don’t have a lot of money.

Typeface Information: For my magazine flag and folios I chose Lotte Paperfang from dafont.com, I chose this font because it was clean, youthful, and modern. At first I didn’t realize the very distinct “S”, and when I typed out the title of my magazine “ZEST”, I soon realized that it was kind of odd. For some reason it grew on me though, and I think that the twisted “S” makes my flag unique. For the type and deck head of my “Couchsurfing” spread I chose Geo Sans Light (also from dafont.com). I chose this because, it’s light, simple, modern, and pleasing to the eye.

Images: For the front cover of my magazine I purchased an image off of istockphoto.com, it is “medium size” and 300 dpi. All of the couches used on the left hand page of my couchsurfing spread were taken from google images. Specifically all images were at least 150 dpi and the black modern couch is from thefurniture.com, the lime couch is from api.ning.com, the red lips couch is from jeremyedward.com, the blue couch is form linea-inc.com, the orange couch is from hampshirebarninteriors.co.uk, the leather couch was from pottery barn, and the oriental couch was from linye.com. The travel icons on the last spread were from istockphoto.com and the man sleeping on a couch was taken from google images and was 150 dpi.

Colors: To compliment my black and white cover image I chose bright, fun colors to write my coverlines and vertical stripe in. Specifcally, the sea foam color is C 36.42% M 0% Y 19.69% K 0%; the bright pink color is C 0% M 90.94% Y 53.05% K 0%; the neon purple is C 37.99% M 92.55% Y 0% K 0%; and the yellow color is C 22.54% M 0% Y 100% K 0%. On “The Worldwide Surf’s Up!” spread, I sampled the color from the purple couch for the circle on the opposite page C 83.92% M 80% Y 11.37% K, 1% and the green from the lime couch C 49.02% M 0% Y 100% K 0%. The same purple and green was used on the following page.

  1. Great call on looking at istockphoto.com for the cover photo; I LOVE it! I also think the wave graphic makes a great connection between the couches and surfing, which gives the reader a hint of what the article is about without even reading the headline. The assortment of couches on the first spread is very eye catching and instantly made me want to read the article. I like how you set up the jump spread, but personally I like to look at pictures before I read an article so I wish there was one larger photo in this spread. Great color palette too! Overall nice magazine (and I'm curious about the article, could you direct me where to find it :)
