Vision and Design Strategy
I was inspired to do a spread on hooping by my brother’s girlfriend. One of the first things she said to me when I met her was, “Do you want to hoop?” I was very confused until she took several giant hula-hoops out from her car. Hoopers tend to be very vibrant and passionate people who are rather obsessed with hooping. I thought a magazine spread on hooping would be really fun to conceptualize. I approached the design aspect already knowing that I wanted to use bright colors, circular shapes, and interesting visuals. It took a lot of digging on the Internet to find images that portrayed the distinct type of personality that hoopers typically have. I think my design is clean, easy to read, and fun to look at. The overall magazine, which I titled Elate, is targeted to the wellbeing of the individual’s mind, body, and soul. It is for people who are interested in learning more about the wellbeing of their bodies rather than the actual science of it all. Its look is sophisticated and clean.
Choice of Typefaces
The main typefaces that I used in this project were Ellington MT Std, Gill Sans, Helvetica, Helvetica Neue, and Minion Pro. I chose Ellington MT Std for the nameplate because I thought it was elegant and upscale with its unique serifs that curve upwards. This is a mind/body/soul magazine aimed towards those interested in a healthy lifestyle. This font is both relaxing and stylish, appealing to the class of people that the magazine is trying to attract. I chose Gill Sans, a sans serif typeface, to contrast with the nameplate and give the magazine a friendly feel. In my spread, I used Minion Pro as the body type because it is very simple with a slightly feminine feel. I chose to use Helvetica for my captions, sidebar, deckhead, etc. because it acted as a nice contrast to Minion Pro. It also reinforced the fact that this spread is supposed to be fun and informal.
Visuals
I defined the colors in my spread as CMYK. For the magazine’s nameplate, I used 60/0/4/0. For the circles that reoccur throughout my spread, I used: 1/69/18/10; 20/0/68/0; 60/0/73/0; 75/45/8/0.
This was such a cool idea! I have been a hula-hooping fan since the age of 5. Your cover looks very professional. I love the image you found for the first page of your spread, it really highlights the hoops. I also really like the mini hoops that you placed in the letters of the title of your spread. It adds perfect imagery to the text. It was also clever that you used the same hoops and had them reoccur throughout the two spreads to link them together. You have great balance and use of white space. Great project. Very fun and creative!
