Magazine Project MERCER

Story Choice:

I knew from the beginning of this project that I wanted to use a story that was about wineries or vineyards. I also thought it would be interesting to do a story about an area that is not generally thought of as a place of wine excellence. I found a few references to Long Island wineries and decided to find a story on that topic. The story I found was in Food and Wine Magazine (online in the archives) and it mentioned a lot of specific places that I was able to find images for. In that way, the story provided a lot of visual connection with the text and I knew it would be a good match for my art direction.

Font Choices:

I really like Adobe Caslon Pro, so I decided to use it in my body copy. I created paragraph styles for my body copy, byline, folio, head line, deck head, name plate, story lines, side bar, and also for the words at the top explaining what the spread was about. My headline is in Zapfino in a color red (C=15.71, M=100, Y=100, K=6.77) that matches an element of the photo on my first spread. I chose Zapfino because I think this situation is one of the few ones where a novelty font such as this one is actually appropriate. I chose Bauer Bodoni in an Italic weight for my deck head and byline. The deck head is in a lighter shade of the same red color to show gestalt. The byline is white so that it’s readable but also not the main focus of the page. For the side bar, I used Caecilia because it is so different from the rest of the fonts I used. I think it still looks nice in combination, however. The folios are in Bell MT Std. because this type face is clean and easy-to-read in small size. My drop cap matches the head line and I lined it up with the left side of the text.

Design Choices:

I made grids of 6 rows by 6 columns. I wanted to have multiple grids to work with so I wasn’t as limited with my placement of pictures, text, pull-quotes, etc... I think everything lines up very nicely, and I used one-pica gutters between the grids. I used the red shade, or a lighter variation (75%) of it throughout the whole magazine so that I could have more gestalt.

Images:

I got my images off of the web Sites for the various wineries I used. The Raphael Winery image is of the tasting room, and it is sized as such: Resolution (72); size (5.22 inches x 3.917 inches). The image of the restaurant and the Greenporter is sized as such: Resolution (72); size (3.708 inches x 2.806 inches). The map I used of Long Island wineries is from http://www.elegantwinetoursli.com/ and the size of that image is as such: Resolution (72); size (7.292 inches x 5.208 inches). The photo of Wickham Fruit Farms is from http://www.fingerlakesfeasting.com. It is sized as such: Resolution (72); size (39.111 inches x 29.333 inches). The main photo is from Montaluce Winery’s web Site and is sized as such: Resolution (240); size (11.317 inches x 7.542 inches). The cover shot is from the Wine Atlas of the World from Bird Library. I scanned the photo in at 300 resolution and cropped out the rest of the text book content on the page. Unfortunately, none of the photos used are credited to a specific photographer, but rather the winery with which the photos are affiliated.
