Week Two- McGlinchey

A website that requires user interaction to communicate that websites service is digg.com. Digg is site which compiles information from all over the web, youtube, the nytimes, national geographic, college humor, some random guy's blog, you name it.. it can be found on Digg. Once an article or media is submitted to Digg, the members can either decide to "Digg it" or to not Digg it. If lots of members choose to Digg a certain submission it will move up in rankings, to possibly the "Front Page".

The idea is that the readers decide what makes it so the front page of the website, not some editor who decides what articles for you to read. The usability of this website is very simple. When you first visit the homepage you first see the most recently digg-ed articles, you can then look at the top digg-ed article of the last 24 hours/ 7 days/ month etc. This allows you to see what has really been buzzing around. You can also sort the information based on subject, just as you would at any other newspaper or magazine site. The design of this website is fairly simple and really allows the user to view exactly what they are interested in and definitely enhances the overall experience.

This is an innovative way to display media. It gives the reader an active role in deciding what content they would like to see first. I think this is a great idea. And from my experiences with Digg you really get a little bit of everything, politics, pictures of outer space, the latest youtube craze.. basically anything and everything. The concept of Digg is based around user interaction which is why the user interaction is so critical. It calls for the general public to become active in the media which in my opinion is fantastic.

  1. Jamie,

POWER to the people. Great example - would have liked to see a little more on how site layout aids quick use by its users/etc. Where are things located? Does this help/hinder usage?

Side note: The Supreme Court also DIGs things sometimes. Their version, however, means "Dismiss as improvidently granted." It's when they decide to take a case and then decide not too.. The more you know!

    Keep up the good work.

    Cheers,
    paul
