Project 1 Resume | Robinson

Because I am dually enrolled in Newhouse and the School of Information Studies, I wanted to strike a balance between creative and professional. As mentioned in class, recruiters at General Electric or Microsoft have different preferences than the recruiters at a quirky magazine.

I tried to maintain an image that was clean and straightforward, but with a modern flair. The oversized first name, aligned left to counter the weight of the headings, is what makes my wordmark stray from the traditional resumé. It especially emphasizes my unusual name. The athletic-inspired stripes in the wordmark and navy spot color in the subheadings infuse youthfulness into it. I want the potential employer to recognize my maturity and professionalism- as the slab serif might suggest- but he or she should also know that I also plan to contribute cutting edge insights into the mass media and technology industries- hence, Helvetica “Neue.”

I knew I wanted to use a slab serif in my wordmark because it allowed for a smooth transition between line and letter. Joanna MTStd provided slab serifs with some serif flourishes in the vowels. It was important to have a serif-looking typeface in order to have contrast between the headers and body text. I chose Helvetica Neue because its “pedestrian typecast” shows the employer that I am accessible. The all-lowercase caps and fairly high x-height in my wordmark and headings reiterate the modern, young image.
