Project 1: Resume & Wordmark | Paterson

Resume & Rationale

Design Strategy:
When designing my resume, I wanted to keep in mind that it will encompass some of my creative ability and organizational skills. Because I am a Television/Radio/Film major, my resume must convey a sense of modernity, skill, and order, which are all important qualities for success in the video industries. The people most likely to be looking at my resume at this point in my career [as an intern] are producers, directors, and some production executives. With this in mind, I know I wanted to use color to make my resume stand out from the rest. I chose a very bold wordmark because it captures my [very imperfect] name in a way that is organized, yet original due to the color choice. The blue is dark enough to make that bold statement and be easily read, but it provides a nice contrast to the black body. The “border” lines also help this message to be conveyed.

Because my skills section is long, I decided to make it into two columns to take up more white space; otherwise the right side of the page would be overridden with whiteness. I chose to make the headers vertical not only to save space, but also because they would make my resume more unique in the body. The headers do not perfectly line up with each section simply because “education” would continue passed the margin, so I moved each header up one or two spaces. The visual hierarchy of the body makes the resume easy to read and understandable. In the future if this design makes too bold of a statement, I can print the resume in grayscale.

Choice of Typeface:
I wanted my typefaces to be unique to my resume: ones that are not usually seen on such a document, but they had to be modern looking and readable. I chose to create my wordmark and headers with the sans serif Eurostile LT Std font because of its geometric shape and many variations within the family of the typeface. I chose Futura Std for the same reasons as Eurostile and I thought it could be easily read; however, I may change that typeface in the future because of its wide counters, which can be distracting to the reader.
