The Rule of Simplicity/The Rule of Proximity WEEK FIVE MERCER

I think the poster for the television show Glee is something that's a simple concept and one that is easily-recognizable for many people to understand (especially those who are younger and a part of the younger generations). It uses the rule of simplicity with this easy-to recognize, simple concept.

The hand in the poster is forming an all-too-familiar symbol: "L" is for loser. Clearly, for those who understand that Glee is a show about kids in a school who are in the glee club, this hand symbol signifies that they are losers! As one watches the show, he/she certainly realizes that the cast is definitely not made up of the cool kids at school, but rather the misfits who all join together in the dorky glee club. Sometimes images try and put pictures/symbols in place of a letter in a line of text. Often I don't think this works. However, in this case I can easily read the word 'glee' even though the 'L' isn't even printed in text.

Further down on the page the designer also uses the rule of proximity by placing all of the words pretty closely together. The words I noticed being close tell the reader who wrote the show. Since there are particular groupings of text on the poster, it leads the eye to each important grouping. The first grouping is next to the logo (with the cool 'L' in the word) and it talks about a special preview of the show. Then the eye is led down to the center bottom to show the reader who wrote the show and what else the writer is known for.

I like the fluidity of the poster as well as the color contrast (red and yellow). I think that it's eye-catching and that anyone who looks at the poster will certainly be drawn in, whether or not he knows the show or even what it is about.

  1. Whitney,

Good job on this post! The use of the finger "L" is called substitution, and the principle of continuation is also at work as the eye is lead through the title to the key information about when the special pilot screening will be.

    Cheers,
