Project 1: Resume and Wordmark | Wettje

Design Strategy:

Because I am looking for a career in sports PR, the first thing I wanted to do was find a way to tailor the look of my resume to display the great athletic school I am graduating from. For me, I felt that creating a word mark that incorporated Syracuse’s dark blue and orange was an ideal way to accomplish that. I carried that idea throughout the resume to create a visual gestalt. The dark blue is close to black and not hard to read as some other colors may have been. The word mark itself is very sleek in style due to the italics and was intended to portray my personality. It is also bold in that it uses all caps. Because my initials spell out a word that describes my love for speaking, I decided to drop the “A” to emphasize the word “jaw.” The tight kerning was to create a tight-knit feel to the word mark, something I feel turned out amazing.

The decision to center the type was made to draw attention to what is important; the information in the resume itself. I wanted something different from what everyone else does and this did the job quite nicely. The balance of white space keeps the resume looking clean and focuses the reader’s eye to the middle of all of the information. The information itself is lined up through tabs and although the headers are not, they seem to be because the rest of the resume lines up.

Choice of typeface:

For my word mark, I used Trump Mediaeval LT Std italic. I was looking for a font that did not have low descenders and lined up the tops of all of the letters, especially in my last name. It made the kerning create a greater sense of unity in the word mark. I used all caps because I was attracted to the fact that the last five letters in my last name could be kerned to create one solid line. The rest of my resume is done in ITC Berkeley Oldstlye Std Book. Because it is an oldstyle serif, it creates a sleek and clean look that makes the resume very easy to read. Simplicity was key throughout my resume because it’s calming and makes skimming through thoroughly very easy.
