The rule of simplicity applies to the movie poster for my favorite movie, American Beauty. While most movie posters are crammed with information from the leading actors to the assistant producer's assistant, this poster has only the essential information. The poster was cleverly created - the eye naturally moves from the top of the poster to the bottom, and then follows the slanted rose back up to the tagline, which is "look closer." The poster is unique in that it does not reveal much about the movie, but its simplicity is intriguing and made me want to learn more about the movie the first time I saw it.

Elora,
ReplyDeleteGood example - I'd argue though that the red rose draws the eye in first. Feel free to talk about what could make a design better in these posts.
For example, "A larger font size would add greater hierarchy to the movie title and subhead at the top."
You also could have discussed the continuation going on at the bottom with the rose and hand both framing the top info of the poster and almost saying this other info to the right isn't as important.
So many examples of sexualized things this week! Oy vey.
